A Special Constable is a volunteer police officer, that is a fully trained and warranted Police Officer who gives their time freely to help keep communities safe. We wear the same uniform, and we have the same powers as full time officers we just serve on a voluntary basis.

We work alongside full-time colleagues to prevent crime, support victims, and maintain public order.

We come from all walks of life and contribute a minimum of 16 hours per month. We take part in a wide range of policing activities such as neighbourhood patrols, supporting major operations and events, responding to emergency incidents, and engaging with local residents to build trust and confidence in policing.

Becoming a Special Constable offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference, gain valuable skills, and serve the community with pride — all while balancing existing work or life commitments.

Duties

There is no such thing as a “typical” shift, that’s one of the best things about the role, you never know what you’ll deal with when on duty.

You can expect to be on patrol, in uniform, on foot or in a vehicle, being highly visible in our communities and dealing with various incidents including responding to 999 calls.

You’ll deal with people, who at times are at their most vulnerable, as a victim or in crisis, you’ll also deal with people who can be violent towards you and others and you will need to be calm and professional in dealing with what can be difficult situations.

Skills and qualifications needed

Our team come from a range of different backgrounds – from School Teachers to Civil Servants, from Farmers to Executive Directors! This means that out team have a range of skills and

qualifications, and we don’t look for any skills or specific qualifications at the start; we’re looking for people that can make time to support and police their communities - making them a safer place to live. Your own personal skills and experience is all that’s needed to support your community.

You’ll need to attend an assessment centre which includes an interview. There are some occupations that will prevent you from becoming a Special Constable – more details can be found on the precluded occupations list.
