A CID Special Constable is a volunteer police officer who is assigned to work within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Unlike regular Special Constables who mainly support frontline policing and visible patrols, CID Specials assist detectives with investigations into serious and complex crimes such as burglary, assault, fraud, or sexual offences.

They receive additional training to support investigative work and may be involved in:

  • Taking witness statements and conducting interviews
  • Gathering and securing evidence
  • Assisting with case file preparation for court
  • Supporting arrest enquiries and intelligence-led operations
  • Working alongside detectives on long-term investigations

Although unpaid, CID Special Constables hold the same powers as regular police officers and play a vital role in building strong cases against offenders. The role is ideal for volunteers with an interest in problem-solving, attention to detail, and investigative work.

This new and exciting role is currently in development and trial within Devon & Cornwall Police, and we are not recruiting externally for this role at this moment in time. The pilot that we have running will give us better insights into how we take it forward in the future.
