All of our officers are trained to the same high standards that you would expect of any Police Officer.

All of our officers are trained to the same high standards that you would expect of any Police Officer.

The initial training is phased over a period of 6-9 months and consists of:

  • Online ebooks and courses
  • Online webinars
  • Face to face training events at our HQ in Exeter
  • Practical, scenario-based training and assessments

The training gives officers all of the basics to allow them to go out on duty and be safe, lawful and use their powers correctly. Having the power to arrest someone is a big responsibility!

The training includes:

  • First Aid
  • Officer safety training and how to use your Personal Protection Equipment that is issued to you
  • How to use your radios and body worn videos
  • Laws and powers
  • Dealing with witnesses and victims
  • How to use Devon & Cornwall police systems.

Once you have completed this initial training you will complete an evidence-based portfolio demonstrating your ability to deal with a range of policing situations which you will receive full support to complete. Whilst completing your portfolio all of the theory training will become a reality and you will continue to learn and develop your policing knowledge.

Attestation

Once you have completed your training and passed your final assessments you will arrange a special event to be attested (sworn in) prior to being able to carry out the role of a Special Constable and being allowed to exercise their warranted powers.

This event is a very special moment in any Special Constables life as you are given your warrant cards which provide you with your new policing powers.

Family and friends are invited to the attestation to celebrate with you and to recognise your achievements by completing all the training.

Continuous training

Like with any occupation there will be ongoing training and development activity that you will need to complete. Any training that you complete counts towards your minimum of 16 hours per month.
